How to study the Bible, learn, and apply its lessons

Approach the Bible with sense of your own need, not simply to teach someone else. Approach the Bible with humility. Don't try to make it say what you want it to say, study to discover what God has said. The righteous are guided and protected by the LORD, but the evil are on the way to their doom. - Psalm 1:6

Remember that God is down to earth. We are all skeptical of people who are so heavenly minded that they are no earthly good. Don't be practical at the expense of being spiritual. Don't be spiritual at the expense of being practical. Put what you learn to good use. If you are discouraged or tired or overworked, it may seem simple, but get some sleep and take some time off. The LORD's angel returned and woke him up a second time, saying, "Get up and eat, or the trip will be too much for you." Elijah got up, ate and drank, and the food gave him enough strength to walk forty days to Sinai, the holy mountain. 1 Kings 19:7-8

Honor your Mother and Father. Children let their parents down if they forget who brought them up. "You put aside God's command and obey the teachings of men." And Jesus continued, "You have a clever way of rejecting God's law in order to uphold your own teaching..." Mark 7:8-9

The most powerful testimony is a holy life. If you wish to be great, according to Augustine, you begin by being. Truth and lasting greatness stems from what we are. "False prophets appeared in the past among people, and in the same way false teachers will appear among you. They will bring in destructive, untrue doctrines, and will deny the Master who redeemed them and so they will bring upon themselves sudden destruction. - 2 Peter 2:1

The most powerful position on earth is kneeling before the LORD of the universe, and when you do, expect miracles. Suddenly an angel of the LORD stood there, and a light shone in the cell. The angel shook Peter by the shoulder, woke him up, and said, "Hurry! Get up!" At once the chains fell off Peter's hands. - Acts 12:7

To keep your testimony alive, you must die to sin. There are worse things than dying, and dishonoring Christ is one of them. We have sown spiritual seed among you. Is it too much if we reap material benefits from you? If others have the right to expect this from you, don't we have an even greater right? - 1 Corinthians 9:11-12

Are you big enough to become small enough for God to use? "'Well done, you good and faithful servant!' said his master. 'You have been faithful in managing small amounts, so I will put you in charge of large amounts. Come on in and share my happiness!'" - Matthew 25:21
