You Have Come To Thousands Upon
Thousands Of Angels In Joyful Assembly
In You have not come to a mountain
that can be touched and that is burning with fire; to darkness, gloom and
storm; to a trumpet blast or to such a voice speaking words that those who
heard it begged that no further word be spoken to them, because they could not
bear what was commanded: “If even an animal touches the mountain, it must be
stoned to death.” The sight was so
terrifying that Moses said, “I am trembling with fear.”
But you have
come to Mount Zion, to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem. You
have come to thousands upon thousands of angels in joyful assembly, to the
church of the firstborn, whose names are written in heaven. You have come to
God, the Judge of all, to the spirits of the righteous made perfect, to Jesus
the mediator of a new covenant, and to the sprinkled blood that speaks a better
word than the blood of Abel.
Hebrews 12:18-24
Darkness
descends when the moons disappears. It starts to rain in sheets. It starts to thunder
and lightning. The next morning, the sun rises in perfect clarity, and calm has
returned. Birds sing in the sunshine. The difference between the night before
and the morning after is sharp.
The author
of Hebrews recalls the time when the Israelites had an experience on Mount Sinai
so dark and stormy they hid in fear. For them, God’s
presence, even in His loving gift of the law, can feel dark and terrifying.
This was because, as sinful people, the Israelites couldn’t live up to God’s
standards. Their sin caused them to walk in darkness and fear.
But God is
light; in Him there’s no darkness at all.
Whoever
follows Jesus will “never walk in darkness, but will
have the light of life.” Through Him, we can let go of the darkness of our old
life and celebrate the joy of walking in the light and beauty of His kingdom.
If you’re a believer in Jesus, how
has your life changed since He came into it? What are some ways you’d like to
grow in your faith?
