The Sovereign Lord Is My Strength
I heard and
my heart pounded, my lips quivered at the sound; decay crept into my bones, and
my legs trembled. Yet I will wait patiently for the day of calamity to come on
the nation invading us.
Though the fig tree does not bud and
there are no grapes on the vines, though the olive crop fails
and the fields produce no food, though there are no sheep in the pen and no
cattle in the stalls, yet I will rejoice in the Lord, I will be joyful in God my Savior.
The Sovereign Lord is my strength; he makes my feet
like the feet of a deer, he enables me to tread on the heights.

Habakkuk 3:16-19
Why do each
of us have to endure suffering in this life? Why is our journey so difficult?
Habakkuk
lived in Judah in the last seventh century BC before the Israelites were taken
into exile. The prophet found himself in a society that overlooked social
injustice and was immobilized by the fear of imminent invasion by the Babylonians.
He asked the Lord to intervene and remove suffering. God replied that He would
act justly but in His timing.
In faith,
Habakkuk chose to trust the Lord. Even if the suffering did not end, the
prophet believed that God would continue to be his strength.
We too can
take comfort that the Lord is our strength to help us endure suffering and will
also use the most challenging of life’s journey to deepen our fellowship with
Christ.
We can trust the Lord to be our
strength in tough times.
