The Lord Makes His Life

 An Offering For Sin

He was assigned a grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death, though he had done no violence, nor was any deceit in his mouth.

Yet it was the Lord’s will to crush him and cause him to suffer, and though the Lord makes his life an offering for sin, he will see his offspring and prolong his days, and the will of the Lord will prosper in his hand.

After he has suffered, he will see the light of life and be satisfied; by his knowledge my righteous servant will justify many, and he will bear their iniquities.

Therefore I will give him a portion among the great, and he will divide the spoils with the strong, because he poured out his life unto death, and was numbered with the transgressors. For he bore the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors.

Isaiah 53:9-12

We might feel the pain of being separated from loved ones, but Jesus felt the ultimate separation when he paid the price of love on the cross. He, who was both human and God, fulfilled Isaiah’s prophesy 700 years after Isaiah gave it when He “bore the sin of many.” In this chapter we see rich pointers to Jesus being the suffering Servant, such as when He was “pierced for our transgressions,” which happened when He was nailed to the cross and when one of the soldiers pierced His side, and that “by his wounds we are healed.”

Because of love, Jesus came to earth and was born a baby. Because of love, He received the abuse of the teachers of the law, the crowds, and the soldiers. Because of love, He suffered and died to be the perfect sacrifice, standing in our place before the Father. We live because of love.

Jesus was the perfect sacrifice who died to give us life.
