Believe
And Not Doubt
If any of you lacks
wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault,
and it will be given to you. But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt,
because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the
wind.
James
1:5-6
Blessed is the one who
perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive
the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him.
When tempted, no one
should say, “God is tempting me.” For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does
he tempt anyone; but each person is tempted when they are dragged away by their
own evil desire and enticed. Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth
to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death.
James
1:12-15
In his New Testament
letter to believers, James, the brother of Jesus, reminds us that we “are
dragged away by (our) own evil
desire.” In other words, our desires work with temptation to lure us down a
wrong path. Though we may be tempted to blame God or even Satan for our
problems, our real danger lies within.
But there is good news.
We can escape the lure of temptation by talking to God about the things that
tempt us. Though “God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he tempt anyone.” As James
explains 1:13, He understands our human desire to do what’s wrong. We have only
to ask for the wisdom God promised to provide.
Pray
your way past the urge to do wrong.
