He
Too Shared In Their Humanity
Since the children have
flesh and blood, he too shared in their humanity so that by his death he might
break the power of him who holds the power of death—that is, the devil— and
free those who all their lives were held in slavery by their fear of death. For
surely it is not angels he helps, but Abraham’s descendants. For this reason he
had to be made like them, fully human in every way, in order that he might
become a merciful and faithful high priest in service to God, and that he might
make atonement for the sins of the people. Because he himself suffered when he
was tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted.
Hebrews
2:14-18
Keep on loving one
another as brothers and sisters. 2 Do not forget to show hospitality to
strangers, for by so doing some people have shown hospitality to angels without
knowing it. 3 Continue to remember those in prison as if you were together with
them in prison, and those who are mistreated as if you yourselves were
suffering.
Hebrews
13:1-3
Empathy is the power to
understand and share the feelings of another. During a time of severe
persecution against the followers of Jesus, the writers of Hebrews urged fellow
believers to “continue to remember those in prison as if you were together with
them in prison, and those who are mistreated as if you yourselves were
suffering.”
This is exactly what our
Savior has done for us. Jesus was made like us; “fully human in every way…that
he might make atonement for the sins of the people. Because he himself suffered
when he was tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted.”
Christ the Lord, who
became like us, calls us to stand with others “as if (we) were together with
them” during their time of need.
Jesus
calls us to stand with others as if we were in their place.
