I
Longed For Your Commandments
Deal bountifully with Your
servant, that I may live and keep Your word.
Open my eyes, that I may see wondrous things from Your law.
I am a stranger in the earth; do not hide Your commandments from me.
Psalm
119:17-19
The entrance of Your words
gives light; it gives understanding to the simple.
I opened my mouth and panted, for I longed for Your commandments.
Look upon me and be merciful to me, as Your custom is toward those who love Your name.
Direct my steps by Your word,
and let no iniquity have dominion over me.
Redeem me from the oppression of man, that I may keep Your precepts.
Psalm
119:130-134
One difficult part of
growing older is the fear of dementia and the loss of short-term memory. Yet,
patient’s brains are so well worn that they can hear and old hymn and sing
along, or read Scripture and remember it.
The power of hiding God’s
words in our heart can keep us from sinning. It can strengthen us, teach us
obedience, and direct our footsteps.
Even when we begin to
notice our memory slipping in ourselves or our loved ones, God’s Word,
memorized years earlier, is still there, to be “stored up” or “treasured” in
the heart. Even as our minds lose the keen edge of youth, we know that God’s
words, hidden in our hearts, will continue to speak to us.
Nothing, not even failing
memories, can separate us from His love and care. We have His word on it.
God’s
promises never fail.
