“Be
Clean”
When Jesus came down
from the mountainside, large crowds followed him. A man with leprosy came and
knelt before him and said, “Lord, if you are willing, you can make me clean.”
Jesus reached out his hand
and touched the man. “I am willing,” he said. “Be clean!” Immediately he was
cleansed of his leprosy. Then Jesus said to him, “See that you don’t tell
anyone. But go, show yourself to the priest and offer the gift Moses commanded,
as a testimony to them.”
Matthew
8:1-4
As Jesus went on from
there, he saw a man named Matthew sitting at the tax collector’s booth. “Follow
me,” he told him, and Matthew got up and followed him.
While Jesus was having
dinner at Matthew’s house, many tax collectors and sinners came and ate with
him and his disciples. When the Pharisees saw this, they asked his disciples,
“Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?”
On hearing this, Jesus
said, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick.
Matthew
9:9-12
Among the lowly, the
wretched, the downtrodden – the rejected of this world
– God’s kingdom takes root.
Taking God’s assignment
seriously means that we must learn to look at the world upside down, as Jesus
did. Instead of seeking out people with resources who can do us favors, we look
for people with few resources. Instead of the strong, we find the weak. Instead
of the healthy, the sick. Instead of the spiritual, the sinful.
To gain a new
perspective, look at the world upside down as Jesus did.
Do
you see a needy world through the eyes of Jesus?
