“’A
Sin Offering’”
The Lord said to Moses,
“Say to the Israelites: ‘When anyone sins unintentionally and does what is
forbidden in any of the Lord’s commands— “‘If the anointed priest sins,
bringing guilt on the people, he must bring to the Lord a young bull without
defect as a sin offering for the sin he has committed.
Leviticus
4:1-3
But now apart from the
law the righteousness of God has been made known, to which the Law and the
Prophets testify. This righteousness is given through faith in Jesus Christ to
all who believe. There is no difference between Jew and Gentile, for all have
sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and all are justified freely by his
grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus. God presented Christ as
a sacrifice of atonement, through the shedding of his blood—to be received by
faith. He did this to demonstrate his righteousness, because in his forbearance
he had left the sins committed beforehand unpunished— he did it to demonstrate
his righteousness at the present time, so as to be just and the one who
justifies those who have faith in Jesus.
Romans
3:21-26
For the ancient Jews a
violation of God’s laws committed even in innocence was taken very seriously.
The Old Testament recognized and provided for unintentional sins with the
giving of a “young bull without defect.”
Old Testament
sacrifices were more than a reminder that accidental wrongs have consequences.
They were given in anticipation that God in His grace would provide atonement
even for wrongs we didn’t realize we were doing. He did this through the death
of Jesus in our place. God’s graced is far greater than we could ever imagine!
Grace
is getting what we do not deserve.
Mercy
is not receiving what we do what we do deserve.
