Your Rod And Your Staff

The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing. He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, he refreshes my soul. He guides me along the right paths for his name’s sake. Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.

You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. Surely your goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.

Psalm 23:1-6

Death is the unknown, and that can scare us. We need not be ashamed to admit that. It is natural to be afraid of the pain that comes from dying, of being separated from our loved ones, of possibly impoverishing our families, and of regret over missed earthly opportunities.

The dying process is but an escort that ushers us into eternity with God.

The picture here is of the LORD coming alongside us, giving comfort and direction as He escorts us through the dark valley to His house. There we will dwell with Him forever.

Death is the last shadow before heaven’s dawn.
