Fly Away And Be
At Rest
Listen
to my prayer, O God, do not ignore my plea; hear me and answer me. My thoughts
trouble me and I am distraught because of what my enemy is saying, because of
the threats of the wicked; for they bring down suffering on me and assail me in
their anger.
My
heart is in anguish within me; the terrors of death have fallen on me. Fear and
trembling have beset me; horror has overwhelmed me. I said, “Oh, that I had the
wings of a dove! I would fly away and be at rest. I would flee far away and
stay in the desert; I would hurry to my place of shelter, far from the tempest
and storm.”
Psalm 55:1-8
The
psalmist David longed to have wings so he could fly away. In a time when he was
being pursued by enemies trying to take his life, he just wanted to sprout
wings and fly away.
Like
David, when we’re facing pressure, mistreatment, hardship, or grief, we might
wish we could sprout wings and fly away. But Jesus offers a better way. Rather
than fleeing our struggles, He invites us to flee to Him. Rather than wishing we could fly away and
escape life’s problems, we can bring them to Him.
Escape
cannot give us rest, but Jesus can.
God gives us strength to face our problems, not to flee from
them.
