Direct My Footsteps

Your statutes are wonderful; therefore I obey them. The unfolding of your words gives light; it gives understanding to the simple. I open my mouth and pant, longing for your commands. Turn to me and have mercy on me, as you always do to those who love your name. Direct my footsteps according to your word; let no sin rule over me. Redeem me from human oppression, that I may obey your precepts. Make your face shine on your servant and teach me your decrees. Streams of tears flow from my eyes, for your law is not obeyed.

Psalm 119:129-136

The Christian life is like a voyage. There are times when we have rough seas. There are times when we don’t know where we are going, but God always know where we have been and where we are going. Our job is to make sure the ship can sail, that it has water, crew, and supplies. God not only can, but will steer us through life.

He allows us to be tested, but He does no testing.

The Bible provides much of our guidance. It is like a ship’s log of where others have gone before us, and how they got through. The Bible is there for us, just as the Holy Spirit is there for us.

Often when we reflect on a passage, we can recall God’s faithfulness through trying circumstances. As the psalmist suggests, perils are found not only in life situations but also in our inner tendency to sin.

As you read the Bible, you will be reminded of God’s past care, assured of the Lord’s guidance in trying circumstances, and warned against sinfulness.

With God’s Word as your map and His Spirit as your compass,

you’re sure to stay on course.
