“A Lamp That Burned And Gave Light”

"If I testify about myself, my testimony is not valid. There is another who testifies in my favor, and I know that his testimony about me is valid.

"You have sent to John and he has testified to the truth. Not that I accept human testimony; but I mention it that you may be saved. John was a lamp that burned and gave light, and you chose for a time to enjoy his light.

"I have testimony weightier than that of John. For the very work that the Father has given me to finish, and which I am doing, testifies that the Father has sent me. And the Father who sent me has himself testified concerning me. You have never heard his voice nor seen his form, nor does his word dwell in you, for you do not believe the one he sent. You diligently study the Scriptures because you think that by them you possess eternal life. These are the Scriptures that testify about me, yet you refuse to come to me to have life.

John 5:31-40

As Christians we all read the Bible. The question is whether we really read it, like we would a novel? Do we let ourselves fall into the story so we get to know Jesus better? The Bible is not a novel, it is historical fact, but do we delve into it to get to know the personalities and character of those in the Bible? We will learn that the people of the Bible are just regular people, who have been divinely inspired to greatness by the Spirit flowing from God and from Jesus. We too can be witnesses to His greatness.

Take the time. It will require an open heart and an inquiring mind to study the Bible. When we discover Jesus as the Person to whom the entire Bible points, we must then decide how to respond to Him.

There’s a great joy for all who will open their hearts to Christ and find life in Him.

The written Word leads us to Christ the living Word.
