“I Have Danced
Before The LORD.”
David returned to
bless his household. But Michal the daughter of Saul came out to meet David,
and said, “How the king of Israel honored himself today, uncovering himself
before the eyes of his servants’ maids, as any vulgar fellow might shamelessly
uncover himself!” David said to Michal, “It was before the LORD, who chose me
in place of your father and all his household, to
appoint me as prince over Israel, the people of the LORD, that I have danced
before the LORD. I will make myself yet more contemptible than this, and I will
be abased in my own eyes; but by the maids of whom
you have spoken, by them I shall be held in honor.” And Michal the daughter of
Saul had no child to the day of her death.
2 Samuel 6:20-23
We Christians can
sometimes be a joyless lot, preoccupied with maintaining our dignity. That’s an
odd attitude, though, since we’re joined to a God who has given us His
wonderful gift of joy and laughter.
It is okay to have
fun! Does your own family have fun? Laughter has been a gift of God’s goodness
that carried us through some of life’s darkest days. The joy of the Lord is our
refuge.
When David danced
with all his might it would be similar to a phrase we use today, which would be
to kick up our heels.
Michal, David’s
wife, felt he was doing something unbecoming to the dignity of a king and
reacted with stern severity. He responded he would become even more
undignified.
Take time to laugh!
Wholesome laughter has great face value.
