Whoever
Digs A Pit
Will Fall Into It
Like somebody who takes a passing dog by
the ears is one who meddles in the quarrel of another. Like a maniac who shoots
deadly firebrands and arrows, so is one who deceives a neighbor and says,
"I am only joking!" For lack of wood the fire goes out, and where
there is no whisperer, quarreling ceases. As charcoal is to hot embers and wood
to fire, so is a quarrelsome person for kindling strife. The words of a
whisperer are like delicious morsels; they do down into the inner parts of the
body. Like a glaze covering an earthen vessel are smooth lips with an evil
heart. An enemy dissembles in speaking while harboring deceit within; when an
enemy speaks graciously, do not believe it, for there seven abominations
concealed within; though hatred is covered with guile, the enemy's wickedness
will be exposed in the assembly. Whoever digs a pit will fall into it, and a
stone will come back on the one who starts it rolling. A lying tongue hates its
victims, and a flattering mouth works ruin.
Proverbs 26:17-28
When fire finishes burning through the
material it feeds on, it goes out. Similarly, when gossip reaches the ear of
someone who will not repeat it, it dies.
Spreading gossip is difficult to resist.
It takes prayer and God's grace to bring us to a point where we refuse to pass
it on or even hear it - even under the guise of personal concern or a request
to pray for a sinning friend in trouble.
We must ask God for the wisdom to know
when to speak, what to speak, and when to keep our mouths shut. It is often
wise to be quiet and speak few words. But if we must speak, let's talk of those
things that encourage and move others closer to God, not those things that will
discourage and hurt them.
Destroy gossip by
ignoring it.
