Keep These Words

 That I Am Commanding You

Hear, O Israel: The LORD is our God, the LORD alone. You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your might. Keep these words that I am commanding you today in your heart. Recite them to your children and talk about them when you are at home and when you are away, when you lie down and when you rise. Bind them as a sign on your hand, fix them as an emblem on your forehead, and write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.

Deuteronomy 6:4-9

Remember that our children learn things from us, as their parents. It is important that we teach them the ways of the LORD. Where else will they learn from? Not TV, not school, and not from their friends. Values are transmitted to our children not only by what we say but by the emotions we convey. Both content and heartfelt appreciation for God’s Word can be communicated to children in a variety of ways, including what they overhear in our conversations with others.

Young children may not initially understand each spiritual idea we discuss, but they can catch the importance we place on it. Children can pick up on spiritual values and grow in understanding as we express reverence and excitement about the Word of God.

Train up a child in the way he should go,

but be sure you go that way yourself.
