“Fit For The Kingdom Of God

As they were going along the road, someone said to him, “I will follow you wherever you go.” And Jesus said to him, “Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests; but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head.” To another he said, “Follow me.” But he said, “Lord, first let me go and bury my father.” But Jesus said to him, “Let the dead bury their own dead; but as for you, go and proclaim the kingdom of God.” Another said, “I will follow you, LORD; but let me first say farewell to those at my home.” Jesus said to him, “No one who puts a hand to the plow and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God.”

Luke 9:57-62

If you have ever farmed, you know you can’t plow a straight row if you look back. A good farmer does not look back when he has started to plow. Jesus wants to teach us that if we want to be His disciples we must make a complete break with all loyalties that hinder our relationship with Him.

Total allegiance to God is a principle that is rooted in the Old Testament. Today, people who cling to old sins and the worldly pleasures they enjoyed before becoming Christians cannot be loyal disciples to Christ. When we repent and believe in Him, we become citizens of a new kingdom. We are to break with the sins of the past.

There is no looking or turning back for disciples.

They march forward into battle, at all times.
